Respect Buddha and the gods but do not depend on their help.

I think we shouldn't over depend on God's help.

In as much as he's here to help and always present in times of need doesn't mean he will grant our requests at that very moment.

Also, people say, "God helps does who help themselves"

God is of course powerful enough to help us all. He deserves our respect, honour and worship.

But as a believer, while praying also work. While facing a challenge, plan on a solution, and trust God to make things go your way.

"Respect buddha and it's Gods without counting on their help"

Budha in this case is God.

to count on someone means you have expectations on them.

you expect them to show up for you in cute and the ugly times. Now that's not bad at all, I mean having someone to count on is a great deal!!! Who doesn't want that?

But then respect in exchange for a reward from a supreme being like budha (in this case God) doesn't seem like geniun loyalty to me.

what is the proof that you'll still be loyal if there was no benefits to gain? Does it mean that you'ld leave your life recklessly without showing respect and concern for the basic principles that Govern life if there wasn't a supreme being to gain benefits from? Principles like honesty, love and more

These are questions we should ask ourselves..

We should show respect to God and ourselves without expectations of any sort.that is what genuine loyalty is all about.

And this is another take on the precept!

Thanks for this, Collins.

I never really saw it from this perspective before.

Buddha to some people is also a God which is worshiped by some group of people. But how is it possible to worship someone and not ask for a help just for a day? For you to be in a position worshipping them means you can run to them for a help someday. If you can't ask them for help why are they call your God?

Gods are Supreme being trusted for our edification and help.

Thank you for this response, Femi

And I think I get your position.

That precept means, count on yourself, Don't count on luck or gods to pull you through. Tackle the endeavors you know are within your capabilities. If you pray to them for strength then they will put you in situations to find it.

And I quite agree.

Great writeup Boluwatife!

The part about being comfortable in a friend's silence got me wistful. It's so tender.

As for the particular precept in Dokkodo... well! I won't be the best judge of that because as you pointed out with the False Consensus Bias, I come from an entirely different world...

All I would say is that while it is "theo-rationalist" belief (I don't know if that's a word!) and sort of similar to how I once kept the balance between my Christian faith and other aspects of my life, I think it is pretty much at odds with how I am realising my faith demands me to live.

Still trying to understand the precept 19,but I think I can link it to this verse of the scripture that says .....

Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's.

I don't know of Caeser, but God will definitely not deny us of His help if we live right with Him. We shouldn't also take His help as an entitlement plan.

There are some things He'll help us do, and there are also things we need the God given head He has given unto us to do.

I hope I am on the right track tho,but this is the little I can give to this at the moment.

Well done.

This is a nice piece by the way.

Well done, Bolu. Nice piece.

In answering your question, my Christian bias will certainly rear its head. I'd simply say respect God and also count on his help. But do so in a reasonable way. Counting on God's help isn't a licence to relax and not act. Count on His help but work as well because He is the giver of our will and intellect, in the first place. So choosing not to use them is tantamount to rejecting the supplier. As St. James says, faith without work is dead. And as people say, heaven helps those who help themselves.
